Student Leadership at Walloon State School
At Walloon State School, we believe leadership is developed, practised, and lived every day. Our goal is to create an engaging learning environment where positive and supportive relationships are fostered, and every student is challenged to achieve their personal best in all aspects of school life.
Leadership at Walloon is not limited to badges or titles. Instead, it is built through experience, responsibility, service, and challenge, ensuring all students see themselves as capable leaders.
How We Develop Leaders
Leadership development at Walloon follows a clear and intentional pathway. Students are supported to grow as leaders by learning how their actions, attitudes, and decisions can positively influence others and contribute to the school community.
A key part of this journey is Courage Plus, our Outdoor Education and personal development program. Through Courage Plus, students are challenged to:
Step outside their comfort zone
Build resilience and confidence
Work collaboratively as part of a team
Demonstrate perseverance, responsibility, and leadership under challenge
These experiences help students develop the personal qualities required to lead with confidence, empathy, and integrity.
Alongside Courage Plus, students engage in leadership learning through classroom experiences, team-based programs, and guided reflection, allowing leadership skills to be strengthened over time rather than measured in a single moment.
Leadership in Everyday School Life
Students at Walloon demonstrate leadership in a wide range of authentic, age-appropriate ways, including:
Supporting peers as Play Support Buddies
Taking responsibility as Games Monitors
Leading by example in classrooms and playgrounds
Representing their school and houses at carnivals and events
Contributing positively to team, cultural, sporting, and community activities
These opportunities allow students to practise teamwork, communication, reliability, and respect while making a genuine contribution to school life.
Senior Student Leadership
As students move into the senior years, leadership expectations increase. All senior students are recognised as leaders within the school and are encouraged to model the Walloon Values through their behaviour, effort, and participation across all areas of school life.
From this cohort, students may be selected to take on formal leadership roles such as School Captains and House Captains. Selection is based on a broad body of evidence, including:
Demonstrated leadership behaviours over time
Participation in leadership development programs, including Courage Plus
Effort, reliability, and positive behaviour
Contribution to school and house activities
Ability to work respectfully and collaboratively with others
Leadership for All
At Walloon State School, leadership is about growth, consistency, and contribution. By providing multiple pathways and meaningful opportunities, we ensure every student can develop leadership skills and confidence, preparing them to make a positive difference within the school and the wider community.
